Why don't you write a blog post?

What's the hardest part of writing a blog? Well, writing.

Go figure.

We all have something to say. We each have opinions and ideas. We enjoy books and movies we could review. We like to eat out or try new recipes and we could easily turn that into a blog post. But to figure out exactly what you want to write when you're sitting in front of your laptop is a little more difficult than just thinking of something we enjoy and writing about it.

Today, let's talk about some ways to make this easier. Here's a list of some things you can do to help you get out of the "no content for my blog" funk.
  • Write - I know this sound counter intuitive. If you're having trouble writing something how can writing help you? What I actually mean is that you should get into the habit of writing. Write every day. Set a time for yourself. I like to write after lunch and set a timer for a short time duration, say 10 or 15 minutes, this way it doesn't feel daunting. Writing every day will help give you more ideas for content when you're ready to blog! Sometimes you can even just use the content you wrote that day for a blog post.
  • Use interesting writing prompts like the ones found here. Pick one and turn it into a blog post.
  • Keep a little notebook with you at all times. You will come up with ideas during the normal course of your life but as soon as you sit down to blog about them... poof... they disappear from your brain. Your brain is like that. Sometimes it hates you  forgets what you want to write about. Keep a list of ideas as you think about them.
  • Utilize the people around you. Ask them lots of questions about what they want to read. Better yet, interview one of them and use that on your blog.
  • Do a series of blog posts. This will help you create several blog posts so you'll have content for weeks. Pick a subject you love or you know your readers will enjoy and do a series on it. Historical figures, fashion series, movie reviews, etc.
  • Create a type of blogging schedule. Think about 3 or 4 different kinds of posts, if you have a food blog you might do a prepping post, a recipe post and a product review; then cycle through these types of posts each week.
Writing every day, keeping track of your ideas and planning what you are going to write about makes it easier to blog. What about you? What are some ideas you have for getting your next blog post written?
